California increases minimum automobile liability coverages

In September 2022, Governor Newson signed SB 1107 into law.  This law increases the minimum required automobile liability coverages to the following amounts starting in January 1, 2025:

  • $30,000 for bodily injury or death of one person
  • $60,000 for bodily injury or death for two or more people
  • $15,000 in property damage coverage

Currently, all California motorists are required to carry minimum liability insurance as follows:

  • $15,000 for bodily injury or death of one person
  • $30,000 for bodily injury or death for two or more people
  • $5,000 in property damage coverage

This requirement was first established in 1974 and has not changed for 50 years.

In 2035, the minimum required liability coverages will increase to $50,000 for bodily injury or death of one person, $100,000 for bodily injury or death of two or more people, and $25,000 for property damage coverage.

Due to the increase of the liability coverages, there will be an increase in insurance premium which may lead to many drivers dropping automobile insurance.  Therefore, drivers must purchase uninsured/underinsured (UM/UIM) coverage which is optional and not required by law.  It is recommended that drivers, if you can afford to pay, increase your UM/UIM coverage to $250,000 per person, $500,000 for per two or more people.
